JEWELL — For the third consecutive game, South Hamilton struggled at the plate against a Heart of Iowa Conference opponent at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex Friday night.

The team’s chances of winning a league championship all but evaporated in the process.

Roland-Story (6-5, 4-4 HOIC) scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning and made the lead hold up in its 2-1 victory over South Hamilton (8-4, 4-4 HOIC). The Hawks closed within one run in their half of the fourth, but couldn’t push any more across en route to their third consecutive loss.

South Hamilton lost the battle, but head coach Rusty Wintermote says his team will find the answers.

“We are a team that will bounce back with a sense of urgency in solving our offensive woes,” he said. “From my position as a coach, I have to do a better job of finding the right combination of players that will respond to a situation.”

South Hamilton finished with four hits, one more than Roland-Story. Breanne Diersen went 2 for 3 with a double and RBI in the setback. Taylor Volkmann also lashed a double and Chloe Barkema added a single.

Volkmann did her part in the pitcher’s circle. She struck out nine Norsemen batters against just one walk, and only one of the runs was earned. South Hamilton committed three errors.

“(Volkmann) pitched a tremendous game,” Wintermote said.
