Lynx drop first two games, then end long skid at tourney

Woodle, Nerland have strong day at plate; WCHS now 3-12 on season

MARTENSDALE — A couple costly errors in the opening game were the difference between a 2-1 and 1-2 day for the Webster City softball team at Saturday’s Martensdale-St. Marys Tournament.

The Lynx had five wobbles in the field that ended their chances of knocking off Southeast Valley in the opener, as the Jaguars took advantage and claimed a 5-2 victory.

Host and third-ranked (Class 1A) Martensdale-St. Marys clubbed WCHS, 14-2 in five innings, in the middle game.

After a break, WCHS (3-12) ended on a positive note with a 13-0 rout of West Central Valley in four innings. It ended a 10-game losing skid.

“Against Southeast Valley, we definitely had our opportunities to beat that team,” WCHS head coach Jess Howard said. “We just need to make sure we’re executing when runners are in scoring position.”

SEV (14-6) moved in front for good with two runs in the third inning and then went up 4-1 in the fifth. Lynx senior pitcher Erin Bahrenfuss limited the Jaguars to five hits and only two earned runs. She fanned three batters.

Cassidy Nerland and Atlanta Hopp both belted doubles in the loss. Nerland went 2 for 3 at the plate, while Haley Flaws was 2 for 4. Leah Kasch and Courtney Lampman added singles.

Martensdale-St. Marys (21-2) received a big performance from Kylie Sherwood in its 12-run win over WCHS. She went 4 for 4 with a double, home run and six RBI. She also did the job in the pitcher’s circle, as she surrendered just one hit — a first-inning single to Zoey Woodle — and struck out 11.

“Martensdale can hit the ball really well,” Howard said. “(Sherwood) is their No. 1 pitcher and it was good to see that type of pitching. She throws hard and her ball was moving.”

Hopp got the start for the Lynx and allowed nine hits and 12 runs before handing the ball over to Bahrenfuss in the fifth.

Nerland had the Lynx lone RBI in the loss.

Jenna Miller stepped into the circle for the finale and helped the Lynx storm by West Central Valley (3-15). In four innings of work, she gave up just one hit to go along with a pair of strikeouts.

“She hit her spots and she was throwing hard to keep them off balance,” Howard said of Miller. “She was working on her drop (ball) a little bit and it was breaking. She got some strikeouts and that was good to get her some confidence.”

Stacey Meyer went 3 for 3 with two RBI at the dish. Woodle, Hopp and Flaws all added two hits.

Nerland supplied a two-run line-drive home run to center in the second, part of a seven-inning outburst for the Lynx. It was her fourth dinger of the season.

WCHS will return to North Central Conference play this evening when it hosts Hampton-Dumont at Lynx Field. The varsity contest will get underway at approximately 7:15 p.m.
