Lynx a PAT away from a 3-TD win over CGD

Most runs scored for WCHS since 2009; Mishler and Ferrell hit two-run bombs

CLARION — This was an offensive explosion on steroids, the type of performance not seen every day or every season.

Maybe not even every decade.

North Central Conference-leading Webster City racked up hits and runs at a dizzying pace Wednesday evening and the result was a 20-0, three-inning beating of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows.

It was the first 20-run game for WCHS (13-2, 8-0 NCC) since it handled Ballard 20-4 way back on June 6, 2009. What is perhaps more significant about the 2009 season? It was the last time the Lynx finished with an above .500 record.

“(Tuesday) we had a very intense, purposeful practice and the boys came with the intention of getting better,” WCHS head coach Adison Kehoe said. “It carried over to the game. The boys proved to themselves that they’re a team that is capable of putting things together offensively at any given moment.”

It was quite a different outcome than the first meeting back on June 2 in Webster City, a game in which the Lynx were forced to cling to a 2-1 victory.

It was also a good tune-up for what the Lynx will face in their next two games against Algona on Friday and Clear Lake on Monday, the two teams that sit tied for second in the conference standings.

“We made ourselves better before our big game on Friday,” Kehoe said.

WCHS piled up 17 hits in the rout, eight of them in an 11-run second inning that extended its lead to 15-0. The Lynx sent 16 batters to the plate in the marathon frame that included a pair of two-run home runs to left field from Riley Mishler and Bryan Ferrell. Mishler also had a double in the second and he finished 4 for 4 with two doubles and three RBI in the contest.

The Lynx received at least one hit and RBI from nine different players. Five — Mishler, Corey Wagner (3 for 4), Noah McKinney (2 for 3), Romel Martinez (2 for 3) and Austin Lampman (2 for 2) — had multiple hits. Five — Wagner (four), Mishler, Martinez (two), Ferrell (two) and Dylan Steen (two) — also collected multiple RBI.

Lampman, a sophomore, was in the starting lineup for the first time, but it didn’t seem to bother him. Kehoe credited his work ethic and said he made the most of his opportunity.

“His work ethic is second to none. He comes eager to learn and he’s a brilliant kid,” Kehoe said. “He’s just a very sound athlete.”

Amidst the offensive output, junior pitcher Cameron Moen put on a show as well. Although it lasted just three innings, he still twirled a no-hitter with six strikeouts. Only a walk to Tyler Steiner kept him from twirling a perfect game.

It was the sixth consecutive loss for CGD (3-12, 1-8 NCC). The Cowboys have been outscored 72-12 during that stretch.

Two games up in the loss column on both Algona and Clear Lake, WCHS can put a stranglehold on the race for the league championship if it can win these next two games. But the Lynx are also looking towards the postseason and a potential run at a berth in the Class 3A state tournament for the first time since 2007.

“It’s all about preparing yourselves for the next three weeks,” Kehoe said. “We want to be that team that is clicking on all cylinders.”
