SPENCER — The run at a three-peat is alive and oh-so well.

Facing a juggernaut Class 3A district boys’ golf field that included five teams all ranked among the top 11, two-time reigning state champion Webster City finished in the second position at Spencer Golf and Country Club yesterday to earn one of the berths in next week’s state tournament.

Fourth-ranked WCHS fired a 314, four shots in back of third-ranked and district champion MOC-Floyd Valley (310). No. 7 Gilbert was the odd team out; the Tigers were third with a 318.

It will be the Lynx fourth consecutive appearance at state. They were third in 2014 at the Ames Golf and Country Club and followed it up with the back-to-back, wire-to-wire victories at Spring Valley Golf Course in Livermore, which will again host the 3A field next Friday and Saturday.

Sophomore Nathan Ferrell swung the biggest stick for the Lynx and in the field, as he earned the individual district title with a 1-over par 73. He was one shot in front of MOC-Floyd Valley’s Tate Arends and Gilbert’s Tommy Doyle. MOC-Floyd Valley’s Trent De Haan was fourth with a 75, followed by Nevada’s Dylan Sporrer in fifth with a 76.

Connor Shannon also scored in the 70’s for the Lynx; he posted a 78. Drew Fielder added an 81 and Bryan Ferrell turned in an 82 to round out the Lynx scoring.

Also on the course for WCHS were James Van Diest (92) and Brian Borkowski (98).

Fielder, one of four seniors on the team, joins Alec Fuhs as the only WCHS players to ever qualify for four state tournaments. He was a scoring member on all three of the previous teams that qualified.

The rest of the 3A districts around the state will be held today. All of the state entrants will convene at Spring Valley next Friday to start the 36-hole tournament.
