WEBSTER CITY — Chad Hisler, the first-year head coach of the Webster City boys’ track and field team, was able to breathe a big sigh of relief Friday afternoon.

The state meet is in his future.

After being shutout of automatic state entrants at Thursday’s Class 3A State Qualifying Meet in Alleman, the Lynx boys’ team earned four wildcard berths to the spectacle at Drake Stadium in Des Moines later this week.

Webster City and South Hamilton will send a total of 17 events to state, nine of them from the pool of non-automatic qualifiers that were announced on Friday.

James Cherry will compete in both the shot put and discus, and Payton Kannuan will take part in the 200-meter dash for the WCHS boys’ team. Kannuan and teammates Zane Carter, Lincoln LaSourd and Zane Williams also made the cut in the 4×200 relay.

The Lynx girls’ team added one event to its haul, as Haley Flaws will be in the high jump field. She automatically qualified in the 100, as did teammate Cassidy Nerland in the shot put and discus.

The South Hamilton boys’ team already had a strong list of 2A state contenders — Logan Klemp in the shot put and the 4×400, 4×800 and sprint medley relays — after Thursday’s qualifying meet at Garner. The Hawks picked up berths for Logan Peters in the 1,600 and the distance medley relay.

The Fisher twins, Jared and Devon, will run on all four relays. Tanner Volkmann will compete in three, Peters will join two, and Josiah Brown, Cole Ellis and Drake Thompson will all run on one.

Already excited to be headed to the blue oval in the 4×100 relay, the South Hamilton girls’ squad gained two more spots for Ady Wintermote in the discus and Hailey Cavan in the 100 hurdles. Both will run on the 4×100, as will the Moss sisters, Alissa and Anna.

The state meet will get underway Thursday morning and run through Saturday. WCHS and South Hamilton will be compete in the 2A/3A afternoon sessions on Thursday and Friday.
