LATIMER — Sarah Vogelbacher entered yesterday evening’s Class 2A Region 2 quarterfinal girls’ soccer match sitting in third place on Webster City’s all-time scoring list.

She exited the field at No. 2, and one more goal would have taken the junior forward all the way to the top. Barring injury, there’s little doubt she’ll get there, possibly sooner rather than later.

Vogelbacher ripped off four goals to give her 43 for her career, as she led the Lynx to an easy 8-1 rout of CAL in the postseason opener. Gianna Gourley was the first player to a hat trick to help WCHS (3-12) pick up its second straight win.

The Lynx will be a decided underdog in the next round when they head to Waverly to take on eighth-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock (12-4) in the regional semifinal Tuesday night at 6 p.m.

Vogelbacher scored her first goal 10 minutes into the match and her second came in the 46th minute. Her hat trick in the 72nd minute pushed her into a tie with Molly Gilbert (42 goals) for No. 2 on the WCHS all-time leaderboard. She moved into solo second and just one goal behind the program’s leader Kelsey Brown (44 goals) in the 77th minute.

Gourley’s opening goal in the ninth minute off an assist from Kaitlyn Wagner — one of her three — put WCHS in front to stay. Gourley tacked on another goal later in the half to help the Lynx build a 3-0 cushion at the intermission.

Grisel Moguel added a goal in the 74th minute.

CAL (0-13) avoided the shutout with a penalty kick goal less than five minutes into the second half. But Vogelbacher answered just 1:48 later.
