Lynx boys slip out of funk, blast CAL 7-0
LATIMER — After putting up just one goal in 360 minutes of match time leading up to Monday’s contest, the Webster City boys’ soccer team had that tripled by halftime against CAL.
And the goals just kept coming.
WCHS (1-5) blasted three goals into the back of the net in the opening 40 minutes and then added four more goals after the intermission to rout the Cadets (0-3), 7-0.
“It was great to get our first win,” WCHS head coach Craig Signorin said. “But more importantly, (we) kept it at zero at the back. The offense should have produced more if we could have found a corner but, again, it was nice to score.”
Signorin has been adamant that the offense would eventually come around. The defensive stinginess is what he’s preached in recent weeks and his players responded. WCHS limited CAL to just five shots and only three of them were on frame. Lynx goaltender Ashton High secured all three shots to keep the Cadets stuck on the goose egg.
Jorge Alvayero gave WCHS the only goal it would need in the eighth minute when he took a pass from Alex Bobadilla and rifled it home. Following an Isaac Bernard goal in the 25th minute, Alvayero punched it in again in the 32nd to make it 3-0 at the break.
Jose Roble, Nicolas Lentz, Michael Gilbert and Cole Briese add found the back of the net in the second half. WCHS finished with 22 shots, 18 of them on goal, and the Lynx owned a 4-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Bernard finished with two assists to go along with his goal.
