Hawks win six events, contend for team title at Ballard Classic Relays

Klemp ups his throwing game, Fisher twins bag six gold medals

HUXLEY — Six event victories and 11 medals put the South Hamilton boys’ track and field team right in the thick of the Class B team race at Tuesday’s Ballard Classic Relays.

Only 24 points separated first and sixth place and the Hawks were right in the middle. They tallied 110 points to take third, just two points behind runner-up North Polk (112). Roland-Story (125) stood out above the crowd to take the crown.

“The weather was a little better than it had been and it showed with our times,” South Hamilton head coach Darrell Paulsen said. “We looked pretty good in a number of events.”

Season’s best performances were sprinkled throughout the Hawks’ lineup. Logan Klemp ignited it with his best throws of the spring en route to discus gold (133 feet) and a fourth-place finish in the shot put (47-41⁄2).

“Logan did really well,” Paulsen said, “and I think he can throw farther.”

The Fisher twins, Jared and Devon, were again the catalysts on the track, as each went home with three gold medals. Jared won the 400-meter dash in a blazing 51.94 seconds, Devon was the leader in the 800 in 2:06.80, and both ran legs on the winning 4×800 (8:33.96) and 4×400 (3:38.66) relays.

Logan Peters led off the 4×800 and put South Hamilton in command. It was a breeze from there for the Fisher boys and Josiah Brown. Peters was on the anchor of the 4×400 after the brothers and Drake Thompson put the Hawks out front.

“In the 4×800, there really wasn’t any competition,” Paulsen said. “But that’s going to change on Monday (at the Bengal Relays in Gilbert). The will be some good competition there.”

South Hamilton also won the 4×200 (1:37.97), which featured Thompson, Cole Ellis, Tanner Volkmann and Blake Barquist.

Brown claimed the team’s only individual silver medal in the 1,600 (4:54.88), just one spot ahead of teammate Quinton Grove (4:57.98). Grove was also third in the 3,200 (10:41.75).
