Hetland, Peters both headed back to state for Hawks

LAKE MILLS — Bum knee and all, Luke Peters simply wasn’t ready to be done.

With surgery already on the books to repair his torn ACL and facing an opponent that had already handed him a loss this season, South Hamilton’s senior 160-pounder dug deep and reserved his spot in the state tournament for the third consecutive season at a Class 1A district tournament on Saturday.

Peters will be joined once again at state by junior 126-pounder Keaton Hetland, who put together a dominant effort en route to a district title. Peters advanced as a runner-up.

“For those two guys to get back there and validate what they’ve done, it’s great,” South Hamilton head coach Dan Brodie said.

Locked in a 2-2 tie after six minutes with Central Springs’ Cole Neel in the semifinal round, Peters was able to advance, 6-4, when he hit a takedown that put Neel on his back during the one minute sudden-victory period. Peters fought off a neck wrench before capitalizing for the winning points and the celebration quickly ensued.

“That was a tough, tough match against Neel and Luke was fired up,” Brodie said. “We’d worked all week for that one match and he wanted it really bad. It’s maybe one of the biggest matches I’ve ever looked to for one of our wrestlers.”

Peters dropped his title bout to sixth-ranked and unbeaten Dalton Nelson of North Butler, 5-1, but his state berth was already locked up because of Neel’s win by fall in the consolation match.

Just like he did at sectionals a week earlier, the No. 7-ranked Hetland looked poised to not only reach state, but maybe make some noise once he gets there. He blew through a pair of opponents without allowing a single offensive point.

Hetland needed just 1:31 to dispose of Mason City Newman’s George Schmit by fall in the semifinals. Eagle Grove’s Mark Dawson was on the receiving end of a 12-3 major decision rout by Hetland in the finals.

“Keaton’s looking really good right now,” Brodie said. “All of the points he allowed were letting them up so he could take them down again.”

The state tournament will get underway on Thursday in Des Moines.
