McKinney erupts for 30, Lynx bounce Cowgirls

Freshman guard puts up 20 points in first half, hits seven 3’s

Taylor McKinney, Webster City freshman.

CLARION — Was Taylor McKinney feeling it? Maybe just a little? Yeah, you could say that.

Webster City’s freshman sharpshooter announced her presence quickly and swiftly here Monday night, as she shot the Lynx to a much needed victory over North Central Conference foe Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, 59-44.

McKinney hit three first-quarter 3-pointers and two more in the second period. By the time she headed to the locker room for the intermission she had 20 points and WCHS was in complete command, 33-11.

“I hit a couple of early (3-pointers) and I knew I was hot,” McKinney said after she had torched the Cowgirls for a career-high 30 points, the most by a Lynx player in a single game since 2002. “I just tried to get open as often as I could and my teammates found me.”

McKinney’s first-quarter eruption led to a 22-4 WCHS advantage after just eight minutes. She finished 7 of 14 from behind the arc and made 11 of 20 shots in all.

McKinney’s hot hand was contagious, WCHS head coach Nicole Muhlenbruch said.

“It was like a whole different team out there,” Muhlenbruch said. “The girls looked confident, they took it to them and they hit their shots.”

WCHS (2-7, 2-4 NCC) was buoyed by a 2-2-1 press that gave winless CGD (0-10, 0-6 NCC) fits, particularly in the first half. The Lynx piled up 17 steals on the night, led by Haley Flaws with six and Halle Mason with four. Flaws also scored in double figures with 11 points.

“It was kind of a laid back press, but (CGD) had a hard time adjusting to it in the first half,” Muhlenbruch said.

Cassidy Nerland added seven points and 10 rebounds in the win. Sweazey finished with four points and seven boards.

Hannah Terhark (14 points) and Sydney Terhark (13 points) did the majority of the scoring for the Cowgirls.
