No. 8 Hawks play lockdown defense, roll

DES MOINES — Eighth-ranked (Class 2A) South Hamilton limited Heart of Iowa Conference rival Saydel to seven field goals and 21 percent shooting in a 56-21 romp here Tuesday night.

The Eagles (0-3, 0-2 HOIC) never reached double-digit scoring in any of the four quarters and turned the ball over 22 times.

“I was proud of the way we came out and played pressure team defense for 32 minutes,” South Hamilton head coach Nathan Hill said. “That’s been an area our team has really focused on early in the season.”

South Hamilton (3-0, 2-0 HOIC) jumped on Saydel early and led 13-6 after the first quarter. The Hawks’ margin grew to 18 points, 31-13, at the intermission.

Collin Hill poured in 20 points to lead South Hamilton. He now needs just 15 points to become only the sixth player to reach 1,000 career points in program history, a milestone that could be reached on Friday when the Hawks host Nevada.

Conner Hill pitched in 12 points, four steals and three assists. Marco Balderas produced nine points, five steals and four assists, while Logan Peters contributed seven points and three assists.

Jackson Jarrell scored six points to lead Saydel.
