WEBSTER CITY — Always searching for tough competition, the Webster City wrestling team will make the long trek to Indianola this evening for a pair of non-conference duals that will be tests.

WCHS will wrestle Dallas Center-Grimes at 5:30 p.m. inside Blake Fieldhouse, located at the Indianola Middle School. The Lynx will also be on the mat for the second dual against Indianola.

Three mats will be used — two for varsity matches and one for junior varsity bouts.

WCHS coach Chad Hisler is aware of the challenges his grapplers will face, which is precisely why he wanted to get his team into the triangular.

“We just had an empty date available and wanted to get some matches,” he said. “We’re going to keep seeing tough competition … we just need to get mat time, especially with a lot of young guys in the lineup. The more experience they can get the better.”

The feature match will likely come at 120 pounds when WCHS and Indianola square off. Lynx sophomore Drake Doolittle, ranked third in Class 2A and 6-0 this season, is scheduled to battle Kobey Pritchard, who is No. 4 in 3A with a 6-1 record. Pritchard’s only blemish is an 8-5 setback against fourth-ranked (2A) Aden Reeves of Albia.

Both wrestlers were state place winners a year ago — Doolittle third at 113, Pritchard fifth at 106.

Doolittle has had little trouble this season; he owns five falls and one technical fall.

“Drake doesn’t shy away from anybody,” Hisler said. “He knows tough kids are going to make him better.”

WCHS will be without top-ranked heavyweight Cooper Lawson, the returning state runner-up. He injured his left ankle at the Dallas Center-Grimes Mustang Invite this past weekend and is being held out for precautionary reasons. Hisler is hopeful he will be able to return to the lineup this weekend.

In Lawson’s place will be junior James Cherry. At 126, sophomore Brady Auderer will make his first varsity appearance of the season as well.

No other changes are expected for the Lynx, who will put eight wrestlers with winning records onto the varsity mat.

On Saturday, WCHS will host the Dick Kennedy Memorial Duals beginning at 10 a.m. The round-robin format will also feature North Central Conference rival Clear Lake, Pocahontas Area and second-ranked (3A) Southeast Polk.
