Lynx dictate play, open NCC docket with romp

HUMBOLDT — Marty McKinney guesses he’s had a team or two shoot nearly as well as his Webster City boys’ squad did here Friday night. But one that shot better? He seriously doubts it.

Getting the looks it wanted from the opening tip to the final horn, the Lynx shot a blistering 68 percent from the field (25 of 37) and stormed away from Humboldt in the second half for a 65-47 victory in the North Central Conference opener for both teams.

“Everything we shot were good percentage looks,” McKinney said after the Lynx second straight win. “The great thing about it was we weren’t just chucking up shots and getting lucky. Those are the looks we want to get each game.”

Getting senior forward Connor Shannon involved early was key and he had a big night in the paint with 15 points and 13 rebounds. The efficient outing at the offensive end allowed WCHS (2-1, 1-0 NCC) to dictate tempo and hold Humboldt (2-1, 0-1 NCC) to nearly 23 points fewer than it averaged per game entering the contest.

“It started defensively,” McKinney said. “We really established what we wanted to do. They want to go up and down and make you play fast, but we controlled the tempo and took them away from that.”

Ahead 32-27 at the intermission, WCHS outscored the Wildcats 19-9 in the third period and was never challenged down the stretch.

Jordan Tanner and Cameron Moen both rained in 14 points to give the Lynx three players in double figures. Moen also collected seven rebounds, distributed six assists and joined Noah McKinney with two steals. McKinney drained a pair of 3-pointers and scored eight points, while James Van Diest and Tyler Bultena chipped in six points each.

Eli Sande paced Humboldt with 11 points, Drew Thomas checked in with eight and Calvin Carlson had seven. Devon Clark, who entered the game averaging 18.5 points an outing, was limited to just six.

WCHS will head back out on the road Tuesday night to face Algona.
