SH baseball blanked by Comets, 8-0
ALLEMAN – The South Hamilton baseball team closed out the regular season on a disappointing note here Thursday night, as North Polk sent the Hawks to their eighth consecutive loss, 8-0.
The Comets (14-12, 10-6 HOIC) rattled off two runs in the first inning off Hawks’ starter Zeke Balderas. They added five more in the fourth off reliever CJ Hewitt.
But it was South Hamilton’s offense that drew the frustrations of head coach Kyle Galetich. The Hawks (4-15, 3-13 HOIC) mustered six hits, but were unable to come through in key situations. North Polk pitcher Colby Cupp struck out 11 batters.
“It’s one thing to struggle if you put the ball in play and feel like you did some things well, but we struck out 11 times,” Galetich said. “At times we didn’t look like we had a very good approach.”
Balderas cracked a double and five other Hawks – Hewitt, Landon Quam, Trey Woodall, Blake Barquist and Jake Hand – added singles.
South Hamilton will attempt to right the ship on Saturday when it opens up Class 2A district play against Collins-Maxwell-Baxter in Collins at 7 p.m. The Heart of Iowa Conference rivals split the two meetings in the regular season.
“If we’re going to win on Saturday we’re going to need to put together better at bats,” Galetich said.
