Wintermote, Hegland club SH softball to win over PCM

MONROE – South Hamilton called on its veterans to lead the way and they answered the call here Wednesday night.

Senior catcher Alyssa Hegland and junior pitcher Ady Wintermote combined to go 4 for 8 at the plate with three doubles, a triple and seven RBI, as they powered the Hawks to an 8-6 victory over Prairie City-Monroe in Heart of Iowa Conference action.

Hitting in the Nos. 2 and 3 holes in the lineup, Wintermote and Hegland swatted matching two-run doubles in the third inning to push the Hawks (9-5, 5-4 HOIC) out to an early 5-1 advantage. Hegland finished with a season high five RBI.

South Hamilton touched PCM pitcher Kayla Jennings for 11 hits.

“We really hit the ball well, especially when we had runners in scoring position,” South Hamilton head coach Rusty Wintermote said.

Brittany Spindler was key out of the No. 8 spot with three hits. Ronnie Olson added a pair of base knocks.

“Brittany was key for us as far as starting out a lot of innings,” Rusty Wintermote said. “She would get on and that allowed (lead-off hitter) Taylor (Volkmann) and Ady and Alyssa to come up and move runners around.”

PCM (8-9, 4-6 HOIC) collected 10 hits off Ady Wintermote, who went the distance to earn the win. Jayci Vos blasted a sixth-inning two-run home run to close the gap to 8-6, but the Mustangs were unable to mount enough pressure late.

South Hamilton will be in Roland today for the annual Kiwanis Tournament. The Hawks will face AGWSR on the south field at 3 p.m., followed by a contest against Perry on the north diamond at 5:30 p.m.
