WCHS sophomore Cassidy Nerland heads to Drake Relays looking for shot put medal

WEBSTER CITY – Currently ranked No. 7 in the state among all classes, Webster City sophomore thrower Cassidy Nerland will take her shot at claiming a Drake Relays medal this afternoon.

Nerland will compete against the best of the best in the girls’ shot put, which is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Nerland’s best throw of the season – 41 feet, 4 inches at the Lady Eagle Relays in Eagle Grove – ranks her second in Class 3A.

“Going in (to the Drake Relays), she’s thrown well enough to medal and that ought to be her goal,” WCHS girls’ track and field head coach Clint Howard said. “It’s the best 24 throwers in the state and that’s a neat thing.”

Nerland was an eighth-place medal winner at last spring’s state meet.

Nerland will also compete in the girls’ discus Friday morning at 9 a.m, shortly after teammate Allie Flaws runs in the 100-meter dash prelims at 8:31 a.m.

Also on Friday, the WCHS girls’ and boys’ 4×100-meter relays will compete.
