Hawks’ Hegland a gold medalist at North Polk Coed

ALLEMAN – A strong early-meet showing in the field events propelled the South Hamilton girls’ track and field team to a fifth-place finish in the eight-team North Polk Comet Coed here on Tuesday.

South Hamilton – the smallest school in the field – compiled 70 points, 29 coming from the field events. Indianola (127.5), North Polk (126), PCM (117) and Gilbert (106) held down the top four spots.

Alyssa Hegland captured the Hawks’ lone gold medal; she won the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 1 inch. Kali Lucas claimed the team’s only other medal with a runner-up showing in the long jump (14-7).

Ady Wintermote added fourth-place points in the discus (101-01), Taylor Ratzke was sixth in the high jump (4-6) and Autymn Olson seventh in the shot put (28-3).

South Hamilton finished fourth in five events, including three relays.

The Hawk boys’ team took part in just eight of the events and settled in at the back of the field with 20 points. Gilbert (154.5) and North Polk (148.5) occupied the first- and second-place spots.

Eleven of those 20 points came in one event – the 800-meter run. Caleb Olson secured the bronze medal in 2:05.49 with Devon Fisher was on his heels in fourth in 2:06.14.
