Sogard, Hawks fourth at DM Christian Invite

GRANGER – The big, spacious greens at Jester Park Golf Course caused fits for the still-learning South Hamilton boys’ golf team during yesterday’s Des Moines Christian Invite.

Only one Hawk broke 90, as they squad posted a 358 team score to place fourth in the field of eight.

“The greens were bigger, harder and faster than we’re used to,” South Hamilton head coach Mark Ullestad said. “When you’re an inexperienced team like we are, it’s a learning process and you’ve got to look at it that way.”

Panorama fired a 319 to take the tournament team title, and its best player George Appleseth claimed individual honors with a 1-over par round of 73. Pella Christian’s Graham Howerzl and Panorama’s Jordan Eng both shot rounds of 78.

Des Moines Christian (341) was the team runner-up, followed by Prairie City-Monroe (346).

South Hamilton’s No. 1 stick Nathan Sogard secured the fourth-place spot on the leaderboard with an 80. He shot a 38 on the back nine.

“It was nice to see Nathan play well,” Ullestad said. “He played a good, solid second nine.”

Colton Coy added a 90. Chase Jewell and Zach Erickson rounded out the Hawks’ team tally with 94s.

South Hamilton will continue its run of 18-hole events on Monday when it travels to State Center to take part in the West Marshall Invitational at Lincoln Valley Golf Course.
