Trojets turn to posts, notch ISC win

CEDAR FALLS – Northeast Hamilton fed the post time and time again, and underclassmen Devyn VanKooten and Cassidy Nerland took care of the rest here Tuesday night.

The Trojets’ two inside players combined to score 23 points to help their team end a six-game losing streak in an Iowa Star Conference win over Valley Lutheran, 36-30.

VanKooten, a sophomore, splashed in six shots from close range for 12 points. Nerland, a freshman, knocked down four shots and sprinkled in three free throws for 11 points.

“It was a good team win,” NEH head coach Adam Vorrie said. “The biggest difference in the last couple of games is we’ve cut down on our turnovers quite a bit and just leaned on our posts.”

Lillian Chamness pitched in six points for NEH (4-11, 4-11 ISC), which trailed 17-15 at the half before outscoring Valley Lutheran (1-17, 1-15 ISC) 21-13 over the final 16 minutes.

Jasper Downs led the home team with 14 points and teammate Emma Armbrecht chipped in seven points.

The Trojets will be at home on Friday to take on league rival Dunkerton.
