SH boys lead at half, Comets rally

ALLEMAN – A sluggish third quarter overshadowed an otherwise solid effort by the South Hamilton boys’ basketball team here last night.

Ahead 25-23 at intermission, the Hawks were outscored 16-9 by North Polk in the eight minutes following the break and they were never able to catch up as the Comets prevailed, 52-47, in Heart of Iowa Conference play.

“We had a strong first half,” South Hamilton head coach Nathan Hill said. “(In the third quarter) we stopped attacking like we did in the first half.

‘We’re right there. As a team we have to figure out how to close these games out.”

Eight players jumped into the scoring column for South Hamilton (2-10, 2-9 HOIC), led by Marco Balderas with nine points and Trey Woodall with eight. Jacob Ratzke and Nate Maile both pitched in seven.

Andy Cook notched six points, snagged nine rebounds and registered two steals. Caleb Olson distributed three assists to go with four points.

Brett Haun (12 points) and Hunter Dark (10) scored in double figures for North Polk (5-6, 4-5 HOIC).
