Hawks lack confidence, lose to PCM by 37

JEWELL – Nathan Hill knows exactly what his South Hamilton boys’ basketball team is in dire need of as it trudges through a difficult stretch of the season.

Confidence. Lots and lots of confidence.

Prairie City-Monroe took whatever the Hawks had left Friday night on Coach Jim Marsh Court, as the Mustangs stormed out to a 10-0 lead and strolled to a 69-32 Heart of Iowa Conference win.

PCM (9-3, 8-1 HOIC) picked up its seventh straight win by limiting South Hamilton (1-9, 1-8 HOIC) to just 27 percent shooting (9 of 33) and a meager 17 percent from inside the arc (3 of 18). The Hawks did find success from long range; Trey Woodall drained three 3-pointers on his way to a team-high 15 points, and Landon Quam sank two triples.

“Turnovers (17) and poor shooting were once again big reasons why we struggled,” Hill said. “I really feel bad for our boys. They have lost a lot of their confidence and it’s showing right now.”

PCM led 16-6 after one quarter and 35-8 at the half. South Hamilton scored more points in the fourth quarter (18) than it did in the first three periods combined (14).

The Mustangs connected on 62 percent of its shots (29 of 47) and were 7 of 11 (64 percent) from outside the arc.

Trey Lindsay and Logan Gilman led PCM with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Ten Mustangs reached the scoring column.

“PCM is a very good ball club,” Hill said.

Marco Balderas, Nate Maile and Andy Cook all scored three points for the Hawks. Balderas also distributed three assists.

South Hamilton will go in search of a season sweep of Colfax-Mingo on the road on Tuesday. The Hawks prevailed 40-39 on Dec. 5.
