Don Bosco rallies in fourth quarter, takes down Trojans by 9

BLAIRSBURG – A flurry of points in the fourth quarter allowed Don Bosco to rally and beat Northeast Hamilton in an Iowa Star Conference boys’ basketball game here on Monday.

The Trojans were productive for the most part, but two second-half spells where the shots just wouldn’t fall made the difference for the Dons in their 61-52 victory.

“We didn’t play poorly, we just had a couple of stretches where we went cold and that hurt us,” NEH head coach Jerry Klaver said. “It was a really physical game.”

NEH (2-7, 2-7 ISC) led 24-23 at the half and extended the cushion to 31-23 before a four-minute scoreless stretch late in the third.

The Trojans took a 40-35 advantage into the final period before the Dons (3-6, 3-6 ISC) went on a 26-11 spurt. Don Bosco put the game away at the free throw line over the final minute and went 14 of 18 overall at the line in the contest.

Nick Jeffers buried a pair of 3-pointers and led NEH with 17 points. Austin Smith registered a double-double – 10 points and 11 rebounds – before fouling out late. Wes Wynkoop added 11 points and five boards, and Truman Chamness finished with seven points.

The Trojans shot 44 percent from the field (18 of 41).

Brady Thome was an offensive force for the Dons with a game-high 21 points. Max Gardner reached double figures as well with 16.

NEH played host to No. 5-ranked (Class 1A) Colo-NESCO on Tuesday. A full report from that game will be in Thursday’s Daily Freeman-Journal.
