Presence inside keys WCHS rally past Cowgirls

CLARION – It’s not a secret – the Webster City girls’ basketball team got knocked down, and knocked down hard, twice early last week.

And do you know what the Lynx did? They got up, brushed themselves off and went back to the grind. It paid off, too.

Some teams may have felt a hangover following lopsided losses to top-ranked (Class 3A) Pocahontas Area and No. 4-ranked (2A) South Central Calhoun last Monday and Tuesday, but Webster City persevered by playing its best game of the season in a 47-41 North Central Conference win over Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Friday night.

Trailing 30-21 at the half, WCHS (2-3, 2-0) – one of your league leaders at this point – went on a 26-11 second-half spurt to overtake the Cowgirls.

And just like that, those tough losses were nothing but a memory.

“One of my assistants said before (Friday night’s) game that this game will dictate how we handled the other two games, so this was really nice to see,” WCHS head coach Nicole Muhlenbruch said. “In the second half I think the key was we slowed the pace of the game down because we’re not a run-and-gun team. Then we were able to run the offense and get it inside and get some scoring from those girls.”

Mikaleh McCoy scored 12 points, mostly from the paint, and fellow inside players Kayla Miller and Alex Dinsdale added eight points each in the win.

“Kayla, Mikaleh and Alex probably touched the ball more (Friday night) than they did all of last season,” Muhlenbruch said. “Our outside girls did a really good job of getting them the ball … the bigs, they have to touch the ball.”

Cassidy Bultena found her offensive rhythm as well and scored a season-high 11 points to go along with eight rebounds, six steals and two assists. Gabbi Hoversten registered six points, five boards and a pair of assists.

Maddie Disney (13 points) and Hannah Kapka (12) scored in double figures for the Cowgirls (2-3, 0-2 NCC).

One of the more difficult pre-Christmas stretches in the state will continue this week for WCHS when it hosts No. 4-ranked (3A) Hampton-Dumont on Tuesday, followed by a Friday road game against No. 5-ranked (2A) Fort Dodge St. Edmond.
