Hawks pin Colfax-Mingo in HOIC dual

JEWELL – A heaping helping of bonus points, brought on by improvements up and down the lineup, carried the South Hamilton wrestling team to a convincing Heart of Iowa Conference dual victory over Colfax-Mingo last night.

The Hawks (1-1, 1-1 HOIC) tallied 20 bonus points in all and won seven of the 10 contested weights to cruise to the 44-19 victory over the Tigerhawks.

“I was really pleased with our effort,” South Hamilton head coach Dan Brodie said. “It was a nice team win … I think there is still a long ways to go, but the effort level continues to increase. Technique wise, we’re building a better knowledge base with some of our kids.”

Originally a conference triangular, Nevada was unable to take part after the middle school and high school were evacuated yesterday afternoon because of a potential bomb threat. The wrestlers were not allowed back in the building to retrieve their uniforms and other equipment.

Five South Hamilton grapplers notched falls, including three at the start of the dual that propelled the Hawks to an 18-0 advantage.

Luke Peters opened up by sticking Will Dunsbergen in 1:45 at 152 pounds. Anthony Hanley (160) and Noah Lutter (170) followed with the first varsity wins of their careers; Hanley disposed of Brady DeJoode in 2:59 and Lutter took out Cameron Warner in just 34 seconds.

“Seeing those guys win their first matches was great,” Brodie said.

It was 18-9 in the Hawks’ favor when heavyweight Zach Lutter flattened Chris Warner in 3 minutes. Charlie Reiter (125) tacked on a late fall in 3:43 over Adam Teed.

Third-ranked (Class 1A) 138-pounder JD Rader secured win No. 119 of his career by technical fall over Richard Bloom in 4 minutes. Keaton Hetland (113) earned a hard-fought 5-0 decision over Ty Carlson, and Brian Greenfield (132) was a forfeit winner.

Brodie was also enthused by some of the matches in which South Hamilton came up short. At the top of that list was the effort of Grant Evans, who dropped his 220-pound bout to Garrett Chapman, 8-4. Evans weighed in at 190 and was giving up 27 pounds.

“Even in a loss I thought he showed some good signs,” Brodie said. “He was right at the door … he gave up a lot of weight, but he didn’t falter.”

South Hamilton will head north to take part in the Central Springs Round-Robin Tournament on Saturday.
