Fuhs takes staggering numbers into road test against Cowboys

WEBSTER CITY – Avery Fuhs is not normal … not on the basketball court anyway.

It’s one thing to have a hot shooting game or even a good week. But through four games the Webster City junior guard is putting up numbers that just don’t make sense.

Fuhs enters tonight’s North Central Conference road clash against Clarion-Goldfield-Dows in Clarion averaging 17.3 points per game – a figure that would be higher had he not sat out nearly the entire second half against Pocahontas Area on Monday because he was caught in the flu’s clutches. He finished with nine points in the win.

And here comes the ridiculous.

He’s scoring those points while shooting 73 percent from the field (27 of 37) and – get ready for this – 69 percent from behind the 3-point arc (9 of 13). And fouling him hasn’t worked either; he’s 6 of 6 at the free throw line.

Marty McKinney, the Lynx head coach, isn’t looking for an explanation about Fuhs’ exploits. He just hopes it continues.

“Those numbers aren’t normal and they won’t stay that way, we know that,” McKinney said. “But he’s going to shoot well all year because he takes really good shots. We’d like to see him get to the free throw line more because he hasn’t missed there.”

Mason Myers, a senior and backcourt mate of Fuhs, hasn’t exactly been cold either. All he’s done through the first two weeks is average 19 points per game while shooting 52 percent overall and 48 percent from outside the arc.

It’s not hard to see why WCHS is 4-0 (1-0 NCC) and bubbling over with confidence as it prepares to face an improved CGD squad (2-1, 0-1 NCC).

The Cowboys won just three times last year, but one of those celebrations came against WCHS, 61-53, the last time the Lynx traveled to Clarion in late January of this year.

McKinney has mentioned that fact to his players a time or 20 this week.

“We are absolutely not overlooking this game,” McKinney said. “(Last year) has been brought up multiple times; the guys are going to get sick of hearing it from me. But Clarion deserves all the credit for that one because they played better than we did and they out-coached us.”

WCHS will look to lock down Cowboys’ leaders Trenton Sann (16 ppg) and Cody Kapka (15 ppg). Sann tormented the Lynx with 18 points in the win almost 11 months ago.

“The Sann kid really hurt us and he’s a good player,” McKinney said. “He’s a tough match-up, and the Kapka kid shoots it well.”

WCHS continues to deal with illness as well. Earlier this week it was Avery and Alec Fuhs, as well as Logan Yates, who felt the sting. Starter Landon Daniels came down with the flu late this week.

McKinney says Colt Richardson would get the start in pace of Daniels if he couldn’t go.

“It’s a domino effect right now,” McKinney said. “We’ll just play with what we’ve got and hopefully nobody else catches it.”

Tonight’s doubleheader will begin with the varsity girls’ game at 6:15 p.m. CGD (2-2, 0-1) is coming off a 53-44 loss to Algona last Friday, while WCHS (1-3, 1-0) has dropped back-to-back contests to No. 1-ranked (Class 3A) Pocahontas Area (73-32) and No. 4 (2A) South Central Calhoun (57-19).
