South Hamilton hopes to slow down Titans, star QB
JEWELL – Five teams are vying for four playoff spots in Class 1A District 7, and an elimination game could very well take place at Taylor Field this evening.
With district leader and third-ranked Fort Dodge St. Edmond (7-0, 5-0) and No. 9 Ogden (6-1, 5-1) virtual locks, that leaves little margin for error for Madrid (5-2, 2-2) and tonight’s opponents South Hamilton (4-3, 2-2) and South Central Calhoun (4-3, 2-2).
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
The Hawks know this is a must win considering they will face St. Edmond – the winner of 19 consecutive regular season contests – a week from now.
South Hamilton is tasked with slowing down one of the state’s most dangerous offensive weapons in Titans’ quarterback Derrick Henkenius, who ranks seventh in 1A in passing yards (1,191) and total offense (1,491). He has 11 touchdowns passes and five more scores on the ground.
Andy Cook is expected to return to the field for the Hawks tonight after missing last week’s game with a leg injury. He leads the team in rushing yards (685).
