Hawks in must-win situation in hunt for Class 1A playoffs

JEWELL – South Hamilton understands that tonight is a must-win situation if it wants to repeat as a Class 1A state playoffs qualifier.

Coming off back-to-back losses, the Hawks (3-3, 1-2) will host District 7 cellar-dweller Woodward Academy (1-5, 0-4) at Taylor Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

South Hamilton will end the season with games against district powers South Central Calhoun (4-2, 2-1) and No. 3-ranked Fort Dodge St. Edmond (6-0, 4-0), so there’s no room for a slip up tonight.

Woodward Academy will try to beat the Hawks with its passing game. Quarterback Mike Payne has thrown for 917 yards and eight touchdowns. He’s also been intercepted six times.

South Hamilton’s defense yields just 17.3 points per game and has registered 50 tackles for loss. All-state linebacker Sam Waid has 10 tackles in the backfield.
