Lucas cracks top 10 for Hawks at R-S Invite

STORY CITY – With just over a month left in her cross country career, South Hamilton senior Kayla Lucas decided to kick it up a notch yesterday at River Bend Golf Course.

The leader of the Hawk girls’ team since she first stepped into the lineup as a freshman, Lucas easily had her best race of the season at the Roland-Story Norsemen Invite. She ran the 4-kilometer course in 16:45.33 – more than a minute better than her previous best time this fall – to place ninth in the field of 119 competitors.

Rachael Huegerich also finished among the top 20 and South Hamilton placed fifth in the team standings with 132 points. No. 12-ranked (Class 3A) Dallas Center-Grimes steamrolled the field with 30 points. Greene County took second with 92.

Huegerich took ownership of the final spot in the top 20, as she sprinted across the finish line in 17:15.27. Allyson Ervin wasn’t too far behind; she slotted into the 27th place in 17:34.90.

Sarah Rueger made her season debut count, as she gave the Hawks 43rd-place points in 18:43.40. Hannah Myers (19:08.79) was 54th to round out the scoring.

The South Hamilton boys’ team settled into ninth with 224 points. No. 9-ranked Dallas Center-Grimes made it a team sweep with 39 points. Saydel took the silver with 92, just six points clear of third-place finisher and 12th-ranked (1A) Ogden (98).

Devon Fisher and Drake Thompson continued to trade the team lead for the Hawks. Last night it was Fisher’s turn, as he put up a 5K time of 18:30.89 to finish 22nd. Thompson crossed in 18:36.06 to take 26th.

Josiah Brown (19:39.49) was 53rd, Jacob Ratzke (20:26.53) 75th, and Thomas Coster (21:55.99) 112th.
