TRACK: Zahn, Jaycox, 800 runners power WCHS boys to fourth at league meet
HAMPTON – The Webster City boys’ track team scored big with its 800-meter runners and its sprinters here last night during a cold and wet North Central Conference meet.
Lynx head coach Tony Bussan used the word miserable to describe the weather conditions, but the program’s longtime leader had nothing to complain about where his athletes were concerned.
WCHS picked up four second-place finishes and three more third-place results on its way to 691?2 points and a fourth-place standing in the team race.
As expected, Algona cut through the rest of the field like it was warm butter. The Bulldogs piled up 1751?2 points – 881?2 points ahead of runner-up Clear Lake (87). Clarion-Goldfield (861?2) finished in the third slot.
“Our kids did the best they could to get in the top half of the conference, which was the goal,” Bussan said. “I thought we did a heck of a job competing points are certainly hard to come by when you’ve got a team like Algona in the field.”
Cal Zahn and Cooper Jaycox were individual silver medalists for the Lynx. Zahn settled for the second spot in the high jump after he cleared 6-0; Jaycox was second to the line in the 100-meter dash (11.73 seconds), while Zahn was right on his heels in third (11.78).
Jaycox and Zahn ran the second and fourth legs of the runner-up 4×100 relay (45.30). Tanner Hoveland and Cory Kennan ran first and third.
Ben Mossman ran his two fastest 800 times of the season – a 2:06 on the lead-off leg of the runner-up 4×800 relay (8:35.89) and a 2:07.37 that earned him the bronze in the open event.
Brandon Patten ran the best 800 on the team this season when he anchored the 4×800 in a split of 2:05. Ryan Heinrichs and Cole Zahn ran the second and third legs.
The shuttle hurdle quartet – Hoveland, Dylan Fielder, Fernando Martinez and Tanner Hild – brought home third-place points in 1:01.86.
Hoveland appeared to be on his way to a second-place finish in the 100 high hurdles, but he clipped the seventh and ninth hurdles and fell back to seventh in 17.18.
WCHS will be in Nevada on Thursday for a Class 3A State Qualifying Meet. Competition will get underway at 4 p.m.
The state meet is slated for Thursday through Saturday, May 22-24 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
