Hawks’ Howard takes first step towards goals; Lucas, 4×800 earn state tickets for girls
MANSON – Devin Howard probably didn’t do much celebrating here last night during a Class 2A State Qualifying Meet.
Was he happy to be heading back to state? Sure. But just stepping onto the blue oval at Drake Stadium in Des Moines isn’t his end game.
Howard wants to be a state champion … it’s as simple as that.
Consider the first step taken.
The South Hamilton senior sprinter earned a pair of gold medals and punched his state ticket. Howard won the 100-meter dash in 11.70 seconds and later cruised to the top spot in the 200 in 23.40.
Howard has finished second in the 100 and fourth in the 200 in each of the past two state meets.
The South Hamilton girls’ track team earned a pair of automatic state berths as well.
The 4×800 relay – Kayla Monthei, Allyson Ervin, Kayla Lucas and Meghan Fisher – topped the field to take gold in 10:17.66.
Kali Lucas will take part in the state meet by herself after she placed second in the long jump with a best leap of 15-61?2.
Only the top two finishers in each event automatically qualified for next week’s state meet. Eight at-large entries in each event will be announced either later tonight or early Saturday morning.
The official list of 2A qualifiers could be delayed due to the postponement of the State Qualifying Meet in Dike last night. It will be held this afternoon.
