BOYS GOLF: No. 1 Hawks clipped at tourney; Bowers, Ullestad fire 36

STORY CITY – Top-ranked (Class 2A) South Hamilton shot a more than respectable 153 during yesterday’s Roland-Story Invite at River Bend Golf Course, but No. 4 Prairie City-Monroe was just one putt better.

The Mustangs rode a magical round by No. 5 player Wade Hill to a 152 and one-stroke win over the Hawks. Hampton-Dumont was third with a 159.

Hill caught fire and was never extinguished, as he carded a 3-under par 33 to take the individual title.

South Hamilton’s Jordan Bowers was the runner-up with an even-par 36. He won a card back over teammate Trevor Ullestad (36) for the second spot.

Braxton Risetter, who was coming off a Heart of Iowa Conference individual crown on Monday, turned in a 38 and Nathan Sogard added a 43 for the Hawks.

“(The 153) is not a bad score, but River Bend isn’t the hardest track we play,” South Hamilton head coach Mark Ullestad said. “We were pretty solid one through three, but we just couldn’t get a fourth score to stay with PCM.”

South Hamilton will take part in Saturday’s Gilbert Invite at the Ames Golf and Country Club. Play will get underway at 9 a.m.
