TRACK: Howard 14th, Flaws 25th in 100 at Drake Relays
DES MOINES – South Hamilton senior Devin Howard and Webster City sophomore Allie Flaws both got the chance to test themselves against the state’s best sprinters on the Jim Duncan Track inside Drake Stadium Friday morning.
Competing in the Drake Relays for the first time, Howard and Flaws were unable to advance out of the preliminary round in their respective 100-meter races at the Drake Relays.
Howard leaned across the finish line in 11.39 seconds in the boys’ race, good enough to finish 14th in the field of 32 competitors.
Flaws took her turn a few minutes earlier and clocked a time of 13.10 to finish 25th in the girls’ sprint.
Only the top eight advanced to Friday afternoon’s finals.
West Des Moines Dowling’s Rico Gafford turned in the fastest prelim time (10.81) and he went even faster in the final (10.62) to claim the relays title.
Jalynn Roberts-Lewis of Des Moines Roosevelt led the girls’ field wire-to-wire as well. She had a 12.32 in the prelims and 12.24 in the finals.
