AMES - The South Hamilton volleyball team sits at 3-3 overall following a 1-3 performance at Saturday's Ames Invitational.
The Hawks knocked off No. 7-rated (Class 5A) Waukee (21-17, 22-20) in pool play and dropped tightly contested three-set matches to No. 8 (4A) Council Bluffs Lewis Central (21-14, 13-21, 15-8) and Ames (21-16, 16-21, 15-12).
Out of steam, South Hamilton was swept for the only time in the consolation pool by IKM-Manning (25-16, 25-18).
"Our goal going into the day was to play to win every ball and see what happens, and letting the situation and the great teams that we saw help better prepare us for conference," South Hamilton head coach Cindy Holmes said. "We are right there with all of them."
The Hawks struggled behind the service line with 28 errors against 22 aces. Anna Moss led the way with six aces, while Alyssa Hegland, Carly Swenson and Ady Wintermote all had four.
Wintermote and Tiffany Jacobson paced the Hawks at net with 17 and 11 kills, respectively. Jacobson also piled up 10 1/2 blocks. Anna and Alissa Moss collected 28 and 23 digs, and Wintermote dove around for 25.
Kenzie Busch distributed 18 assists, while Swenson doled out 13.
South Hamilton will hit the road to face Ogden this evening.
