To the Editor:
Is purchasing land for new housing a serious proposal? Where will the $2,131,000 come from? From the same place the electric car money came from? Where will people be employed so they can afford new housing in the $100,000 to $200,000 price range or even the $30,000 to $40,000 range?
Webster City Community Schools is currently the town's largest employer since Electrolux departed. Are we counting on Fort Dodge and surrounding towns to come here and buy these houses? Again, I ask, who will buy these houses? Are we putting the cart before the horse?
Our property tax has been increased by $600 in the last two years. We pay $4,600 a year. How much will property tax go up if you borrow this money? The high cost of living in Webster City will soon drive us out of our home and out of town.
Why not buy houses in central Webster City, demolish them and build new affordable housing where we already have vacant lots and the infrastructure and streets?
How about developing Hospital Hill which is also centrally located. The proposed location is close to Highway 20 but there is no access to that road from Beach Street.
I think the citizens of Webster City should be allowed to vote on this proposal instead of allowing the city manager and council to make that decision on their own.
