The Hamilton County Board of Supervisors Tuesday morning set a public hearing on the proposed vacation of county road was set for Sept. 9 at 9:15 a.m.
Board Chairman Wes Sweedler said the road in question, part of Quinn Avenue which dead ends at new Highway 20. Sweedler said the project met all of the qualifications to proceed with the vacation.
The issue came to the board from the adjacent land owners, according to County Engineer Dan Waid. The request is to close a one-half mile stretch of the road. A public hearing is required prior to proceeding with the vacation.
"We don't often get an opportunity to vacate miles of gravel road in Hamilton County, especially in this instance when the landowners on both sides of the road have filed the petition to vacate the road," Supervisor David Young said. "It dead ends up against Highway 20 so it doesn't effect commerce or fire or law enforcement."
"I think this is a good opportunity and applaud the people who own the surrounding land for initiating the activity to close the road," Young said.
An addendum to an agreement for the C-STEP Project, also known as the Van Diest project, was approved. The agreement concerns the construction of a right-hand turn lane off of Highway 17 that would connect to the construction project at 230th Street and Estes Avenue. County Engineer Dan Waid said the agreement with the Iowa Department of Transportation called for the DOT to pay for 55 percent of that phase of the project with a cap of $30,250.
"This amendment would increase that amount due to the actual cost of the construction that was some $12,000 higher," Waid said. The amendment would allow for $36,390.20 to be paid for by the DOT.
The board also approved moving forward with a substance abuse prevention services agreement.
In personnel actions, the board approved the resignation of Troy Brinkman from the conservation department. A change of status was approved for Kelly Yates, moving from $8.50 per hour to $11 per hour. A probation wage increase was approved for Paula Pohlman, an employee with the sheriff's department, from $13 to $13.25 per hour.
