Fruits of their labor

Bountiful Baskets Food Co-op has just begun delivering fresh produce to the Hamilton County Area. Right now, the volunteer-run co-op is open every other Saturday morning in the parking lot of McMurray Hatchery.

Volunteer Robin Streigle, of Webster City, said that customers can order fresh fruits and veggies through the community organization's website, and the fare differs each week.

"This week, we have sourdough bread, a tropical pack and a grill pack," she said. "We had cherries, tomatoes and blueberries come in these 25-pound containers to sort."

Amber Davis, of Ellsworth, and Mike Steinlicht, of Stanhope, unload produce into the baskets for awaiting customers at McMurray Hatchery last Saturday.

To order, Streigle said to set up a free account on the website, www.bountifulbaskets.org, and select "Participate Now" on the homepage. Click 'Hamilton County', and then 'Webster City'.

This is the first time we have held this co-op in Webster City," Streigle continued "The closest ones are in Fort Dodge and Boone, and they have been running for a while now."

Streigle said that anyone can order the baskets and there is no requirement. Customers will get more information on the basket contents in their email when they sign up for the program, so that they can decide if they would like to order for the week.

The organization also looks for volunteers to help unload the truck on Saturday mornings.

"People of any age can volunteer to help unload," she said. "You can call me at (515) 450-7651 or visit the website for volunteer information and pickup times."

Those interested can visit the co-op's website www.bountifulbaskets.org and their Facebook page www.facebook.com/BountifulBaskets for more information and recipes.
