Jam of the Week: "New Generation" by Damu The Fudgemunk
As August nears, my internal clock compels me to eat BLT sandwiches.
If you read my column often, you might recall the importance of BLTs in my family. When I last visited them, I made BLT pizza for the family. Getting my parents out of the kitchen was a small gift for their birthdays which are both in June.
I stressed about that pizza. As simple as it is, BLTs aren't something you can take lightly in the Krajewski household. It was something we've never tried before, and you can't take such a tradition lightly. Luckily, it was easy to make and was received well.
The BLT tradition goes back further than I can recall. Growing up, my mother always kept a garden in our backyard. She grew quite a few things, but her tomato crop was always the most important. Right now, I'm seething with jealousy and hunger as she posts photos of this year's harvest on Facebook.
Of course, we had to do something with those tomatoes. My sister and I went about our late-summer days each August, often returning home to the smell of bacon cooking on the stove and the sound of corn sizzling on the grill.
I suspect the tradition began because it was an easy meal to throw together for a couple hungry kids that had been running outside all day, or often in my case, watching terrible movies with friends. Also, it was one thing that my entire family could agree on.
As each August went on and the tomatoes weren't getting any riper, we would eat BLTs and corn on the cob several times a week. I don't think I ever tired of eating them through the end of my summer vacation. It wasn't just the classic taste of BLTs and corn. After running around all summer with friends, it was nice to take some time to sit down with my family and enjoy something together.
