GRUNDY CENTER - What looked like a potential mismatch on paper turned out to be anything but, as Northeast Hamilton gave 20-win Gladbrook-Reinbeck everything it wanted and then some in a Class 1A District 5 quarterfinal-round contest here yesterday evening.
The back-and-forth battle eventually went the Rebels way, as they plated three runs in the fourth inning, one in the fifth and two insurance runs in the sixth off Northeast Hamilton senior hurler Logan Seiser en route to a 7-4 victory over the Trojans.
Northeast Hamilton's season may have ended at 7-14, but the Trojans didn't go down without a fight.
"We played a really good game and I couldn't be any more proud of the guys for the way they played," NEH head coach Chace Pruismann said. "They gave me everything they had and that was awesome to see."
Gladbrook-Reinbeck (21-9) advanced to Thursday's district semifinal back in Grundy Center. The Rebels received a first-inning solo home run from Camden Kickbush; he also earned the win on the bump.
Gabe Rapp didn't let his career end in a whimper. The NEH senior went 3-for-4 at the dish and fell a triple short of the cycle. He lashed a double and scored in the second inning and then rocked a two-run home run in the fourth that gave the Trojans a 3-1 edge.
