Kyle Schura of the Science Center of Iowa holds a basketball pump as Leah Inglelin pumps air into a two-liter bottle. Zahmaria Jensen-Gully stands back to watch the action. The result was a loud “pop” and the creation of a cloud within the bottle. The experiment was all part of a program called, “Kablooey,” which explored the scientific properties of air, pressure and sound. The program, at Kendall Young Library, allowed children to take part in hands-on experiments and even sent them home with a few to try on their own.
