Registration has begun for a new senior fitness class hosted by Central Iowa RSVP.
Volunteers have completed training to teach Balance, Agility, Strength, Endurance (BASE) Senior Fitness Exercise Classes. The sessions aim to improve the overall health of participants and are specifically crafted for seniors.
Classes are set to begin on July 7. Five locations are hosting the classes at different times. RSVP Volunteer Coordinator Becky Koppen said those who sign up can attend classes at multiple locations. An identification card will be given to participants to help them transfer between locations easily, Koppen said.
"I think that makes great sense," Koppen said. "If something in your schedule makes it so you can't go to one of the classes, you can go to another."
Locations for the classes include All Cultures Equal on Mondays and Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., Crestview Apartments on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., Fuller Hall Recreation Center on Mondays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., Southfield Assisted Living Apartments on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., and the Webster City Community and Senior Center on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Koppen said other locations are also looking to host classes.
The low-impact classes can be attended at no cost to adults 55-years-old and up. Koppen said the classes are generally limited to that age group. However, she would consider registering interested adults under the minimum age if they were, for instance, recovering from surgery or an injury.
Those who register will have to sign a liability waiver and fill out a self-health evaluation. A doctor's release is not required to participate in the program. Koppen said those who are unsure if they are healthy enough to exercise should speak to a doctor. Koppen said participants should bring a water bottle and tennis shoes to the classes. Hand-weights will also be required after the first couple classes.
