JEWELL - Hits came in bunches for the South Hamilton softball team last night at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex, as the Hawks were able to reverse an earlier outcome against Heart of Iowa Conference rival Saydel.
And it wasn't even close.
A seven-run fifth inning allowed South Hamilton to runaway for a 12-3 rout of the Eagles. The Hawks hammered out 18 hits, as nine girls registered at least one base knock.
"I think the girls came out really determined and we keep telling them that hitting is contagious," South Hamilton head coach Laura Read said.
Six hits went up on the board during the marathon fifth inning that extended South Hamilton's lead to 10-2. Kenzie Busch sent a laser down the right-field line for a two-run triple and Kali Lucas went the other way - right down the left-field line - for a two-RBI double. Kayla Lucas, Carly Swenson and Alyssa Hegland all roped RBI singles during the spurt.
Kayla Lucas led the way with four singles. Ady Wintermote slapped three and Hegland added two and two RBIs.
