CLARION - The Webster City baseball team had plenty of chances to take control here last night, but time and time again the Lynx came up empty in those situations.
Clarion-Goldfield did a better job of closing and the Cowboys (2-1, 1-1 NCC) handed WCHS its first loss of the season, 6-4.
"We obviously didn't play great, but we didn't play terrible either," WCHS head coach Troy Smock said. "A hit here and there and the game is totally different."
WCHS (2-1, 0-1 NCC) left runners stranded at second and third in the first inning and then left the bases jammed in the fourth. Cowboys' pitcher Trenton Sann got himself out of trouble numerous times with 10 strikeouts.
Cam Gordon cranked a second-inning solo home run in the loss. Trey Tesdahl piled up three hits, including a double, and an RBI. Cal Zahn smacked a pair of singles and plated a run, Jordan Myers laced a double, and Ben Mossman produced an RBI single.
Dylan Fielder went the distance on the hill in a losing effort. The senior right hander gave up seven hits and five earned runs. He walked four and struck out four.
