The process for hiring a new fire chief, police chief and promoting a new fire captain were approved at a meeting of the Webster City Civil Service Commission on Wednesday afternoon.
The city is seeking applicants for the positions of police chief and fire chief after Brian Hughes and Mike Lund announced they would be vacating their positions this year.
A written test and interview board will help determine who will fill the position of fire chief. The position requires a minimum of five years of full time experience in a fire department or three years of full time experience and two years of comparable experience or educational training. Questions on the written test will include subjects such as hazardous materials operations, fire fighter level one and two certifications and more.
The deadline to submit an application, resume and reference list for the fire chief position is May 5. The process laid out at Wednesday's meeting calls for tests and interviews to be held on May 29 or 30.
Most of the process that the city used to hire Webster City Police Chief Brian Hughes will be reused in seeking a new police chief. It will include an "in basket" exercise, which includes evaluation of judgement, planning, organization and more. It will also include an interview and a portion where applicants will have to speak in front of the interview board on a topic decided on by interviewers. However, commission members Trish Bahrenfuss said the questions posed will not be the same.
The deadline to submit an application, resume and reference list for the police chief position is May 20, with interviews to be held the week of Aug. 4.
A process for hiring a new fire captain was also approved. Beth Chelesvig, administrative services director, said Andy Sowle is currently the only member of the Webster City Fire Department eligible for the promotion.
In other business, George Caggiano was selected to chair the commission.
