Wendell Westrum Carlson was born March 21, 1914, at the family farm near Stratford, IA. He was one of five children born to Theodore and Jennie (Westrum) Carlson. Wendell graduated from the high school at Stanhope, IA in 1931.
On September 6, 1936 he married Ruth Elaine Williams of Stanhope IA. They immediately moved onto the family farm where they lived until 1986. The farm became a century farm in 1972 and was originally owned by his grandfather, Christian Carlson. In 1974, Wendell and Ruth gave the Christian Carlson Barn to the 1900 farm of the Living History Farms in Des Moines IA. He served on the Board of Governors of the Living History Farms.
Wendell was active in the Disciples Christian Church in Stanhope. He served as chairman of the Board in 1964 when the discussion began to form The Stanhope Parish Church by joining together with the Stanhope Methodist Church. Wendell was active in the Farm Bureau, County Extension work, and the Soil Conservation District. In the early years of his farming career he helped establish the Central Iowa Farm Business Association and was a member for 60 years, leaving an interesting record of his stewardship of the land. He served as Secretary Treasurer for the beginning of the State Farm Business Organization. Wendell was a member of the board of directors of the Farmers Savings Bank in Stratford for many years until the bank was sold to the Boone Citizens National Bank. He was a past master of Acorn Lodge No. 601 A. F. & A. M. at Stratford, IA. and also past patron of Avon Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.
For 12 years, they spent winters in Queen Valley, AZ. They loved their home there and the warm weather.
Ruth and Wendell moved to Boone, IA in 1995. They enjoyed membership in the Central Christian Church. They lived in a duplex near the Eastern Star Home. Ruth eventually moved to the memory care home, Hearthstone in 2004. Wendell continued to live in the duplex until 2012 when he moved to an assisted living apartment in the Home.
Ruth and Wendell enjoyed traveling and have been in all 50 states and 26 different countries on 6 continents. In 1994 Ruth was diagnosed with Alzheimers. It was hard for Wendell to see her gradually lose all those beautiful memories they had together.
Wendell was preceded in death by Ruth, his parents, his two brothers Ransom and Chester, his two sisters Arlene Cottington and Maxine Dick and their spouses. Surviving are one daughter Kathryn Mortvedt of Ellsworth IA, one son Don Carlson and his wife Mary Jane (Cartwright) of Orono, MN, four grandchildren: Alan Johnson, his wife Shellie, Jana Vanek, Melissa Weaver, her husband Michael, Schelli Cronk, her husband Brian and ten Great Grandchildren.
