Inconsistent Lynx unable to keep up with Humboldt

Wildcats use 26-13 third-quarter run to take command; Myers and Mossman lead WCHS

WEBSTER CITY - Consistently inconsistent over the initial three quarters, the Webster City boys' basketball team saw its three-game win streak evaporate in its own gymnasium Friday night.

The Lynx showed flashes of solid play, but not enough to hang with Humboldt, which used a big third quarter to vault ahead to stay in a 61-51 North Central Conference victory.

"We're just way too inconsistent at both ends of the floor," WCHS head coach Marty McKinney said. "We've got to be consistent for four quarters if we're going to contend with the good teams."

WCHS guard Ben Mossman (22) pulls up and shoots a jumper over Humboldt’s Jack Curran (21) on Friday in Webster City. Mossman scored 12 points and Curran led all scorers with 16 in Humboldt’s 61-51 NCC victory.

WCHS (8-9, 8-7 NCC) scored the game's first four points and then promptly got outscored 15-2 over the final six minutes of the period.

Arguably the Lynx best quarter of the season - a 17-4 outburst in the second - gave them a 23-19 halftime advantage, but Humboldt answered by doubling them up (26-13) in the third.

"We played one of our best quarters of the year (in the second) and then we went out in the third and got outscored 26-13," McKinney said. "We would play pretty good defense for a while and then all of a sudden we'd give up layups. It was frustrating."
