The Daily Freeman-Journal staff brought home 13 awards from the Iowa Newspaper Association Better Newspaper Contest, including a first place award for best special section.
The editorial and advertising awards were presented Friday night at the annual INA banquet held at the Marriott Hotel in Des Moines.
The news department received first place honors in the Best Special Section for Class I dailies division (newspapers with circulations less than 9,999) for its five-section Progress 2013 edition. Sports Editor Troy Banning received third place for Best Sports Section and second place in the Best Sports Story category for Head Games, Banning's comprehensive story about concussions in high school sports. He also received third place in the Best Series category for the two-part Head Games series.
The Daily Freeman-Journal was recognized for its community leadership with a second place honor in that category.
The DF-J also received a third place for Best Newspaper Marketing.
The advertising staff received second place honors for a Grid Iron Grill advertisement in the category Best Ad featuring grocery, food or entertainment. Another second place award was presented for the Best Ad featuring Agriculture for a First American Bank advertisement and the staff received second place in the Best Web Advertisement category for a Casady Brothers Implement ad.
The staff received third place for its fall "Faces in the Crowd" campaign for Fareway and third place for Best Special Section Advertising for The Fan fall sports preview.
Additionally, the advertising department received third place honors for Best Ad Idea for a Community Promotion for Ladies Night Out.
Ken Baker placed third in the Best Ad Designer category.
