Cowgirls reel off 21-6 run late, handle WCHS

CLARION - Five points in the final five seconds of the second quarter gave Clarion-Goldfield all the momentum it would need and the Cowgirls went on to trump Webster City, 63-39, in a North Central Conference girls' basketball contest here Friday night.

The hiccup at the end of the opening half, coupled with a sluggish final period continued the season long trend of inconsistency for the Lynx (1-13, 1-11 NCC). Clarion-Goldfield (9-7, 7-7 NCC) outscored WCHS 21-6 over the final eight minutes.

"We need to put four quarters together," WCHS head coach Nicole Muhlenbruch said. "We had spurts where we were fabulous and then we had spurts where we didn't even look like we knew what was going on."

Trailing 29-17 at intermission, WCHS sliced its deficit to as few as seven in the third quarter, but foul trouble for leading scorer Cassidy Bultena took the team out of rhythm for good.

Bultena, who scored seven of her nine points in the first half, went to the bench with her fourth foul midway through the third quarter and then fouled out at the midpoint of the final quarter.

The Cowgirls opened up a 42-33 advantage after three periods and then scored the first six points of the fourth to put the game on ice.
