Clarion-Goldfield ends 13-game slide vs Lynx

CLARION - A seven-point spurt early in the fourth quarter, coupled with an 8-0 run later in the period erased the memories of a long drought for the Clarion-Goldfield boys' basketball team here Friday night.

The Cowboys hung tough down the stretch and ended a 13-game losing streak at the expense of Webster City, 61-53, in North Central Conference play.

Clinging to a 52-49 advantage with three minutes remaining, Clarion-Goldfield (2-13, 2-11 NCC) made six of eight free throws over the next two minutes while the Lynx (5-8, 5-6 NCC) went scoreless, and that put the game and the losing skid to bed.

A noticeably frustrated Marty McKinney, the Lynx head coach, said the loss can be pinned on one thing - the defense.

"We are very poor fundamentally on defense ... we don't guard well enough to beat people," he said. "It's that simple.

"I knew we were going to get Clarion's best shot and I knew this was going to be a ballgame, but they out-executed us, they out-hustled us and they out-coached us."
