SH girls clipped by Eagles in HOIC foul fest

Saydel manages to keep ball away from Hawks over final 2:20

JEWELL - Fouls were more common than, well, the common cold on Coach Jim Marsh Court Friday night, yet when South Hamilton needed a whistle late there was nothing but silence.

Leading 39-36 and in possession of the ball with 2 minutes, 20 seconds remaining, Saydel was able to whittle the clock all the way down to 19.9 ticks before South Hamilton finally fouled and the Eagles' Brooklyn Allgood drained a free throw to make it a two-possession game and send the Eagles to a 40-36 Heart of Iowa Conference victory.

Saydel (8-5, 7-4 HOIC) called timeout with one minute left and Hawks' head coach Kathi Fisher says she instructed her players to begin fouling, but by the time they finally did it was too late.

Hawks’ junior Kayla Lucas (10) pressures Saydel’s Sadie Thompson and forces a jump ball on Friday.

"Basketball IQ is something we need to improve on," Fisher said. "Right now we're quiet. Nobody is talking, nobody is communicating and that makes them timid."

Fouls were problematic for both teams throughout; 45 were whistled in all and the Hawks and Eagles combined to shoot 43 free throws. The referees called 17 in the first quarter and 25 in the opening half, leaving Fisher muttering under her breath.

"It wasn't just the calls, but the inconsistency of the calls," she said.

B-K outscores Hawk girls 12-0 in OT to win; Fisher scores 17

BELMOND - Scoring wasn't a problem for the South Hamilton girls' basketball team until the game reached overtime here Saturday night.

And then the Hawks went ice cold.

Belmond-Klemme (3-7) outscored South Hamilton (1-13) 12-0 in the extra four-minute session and claimed the non-conference contest, 64-52.

South Hamilton was without starting guards Kayla Lucas and Kayla Monthei. Kaitlin Fisher picked up the scoring slack with 17 points, and Kali Lucas and Savana Stangeland both pumped in 10.

Allyson Ervin had the best game of her career with nine points, nine rebounds and five steals. Carly Swenson provided five points and six assists.

The Hawks were their own worst enemy by missing 15 of their 24 free throw attempts.

Belmond-Klemme's Mackenzie Tenold scored a game-high 21 points and teammate Olivia Kuhlers added 17. The Broncos splashed in seven 3-pointers.

South Hamilton will host HOIC foe PCM on Tuesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
