South Hamilton Basketball Reports

Hawk boys have hiccup at North Polk, fall 56-54

January 13, 2014
The Daily Freeman Journal

ALLEMAN - The usually consistent South Hamilton boys' basketball team was off its game, particularly in the second and third quarters, here on Friday and it allowed the upset bug to creep into the Hawks' system.

North Polk went on a 27-15 run over the middle 16 minutes to build a big enough lead to hold off the charging Hawks late for a 56-54 Heart of Iowa Conference victory.

Down 36-25 at the intermission, South Hamilton (7-3, 7-2 HOIC) maneuvered to within one midway through the third period, but North Polk (4-6, 4-4 HOIC) closed on an 11-1 run to take an 11-point edge into the final eight minutes.

Freshman Collin Hill drained a 3-pointer to pull the Hawks back to within one in the final minute; his potential game-tying bucket from 14 feet was off the mark as the horn sounded.

Hill led all scorers with 23 points. Matt Hislop dropped in 13 before fouling out with three minutes remaining, and Andrew Wintermote chipped in 11.

North Polk received 17 points from Blake Brauer. The Comets outscored South Hamilton 24-6 from behind the 3-point arc.

ALLEMAN - The Heart of Iowa Conference's leading scorer did a number on South Hamilton here Friday night.

Miranda Murphy split the nets on six 3-pointers and went off for a game-high 22 points to lead sixth-ranked (Class 3A) North Polk to an easy 63-26 victory.

Murphy, who averages better than 20 points per game, received help from a slew of teammates; Macy Gill and Megan Murphy both finished with 10 points, and Maddy Hill added eight.

South Hamilton (1-10, 1-9 HOIC) stayed within five points during the initial eight minutes, but the Comets (9-2, 8-1 HOIC) outscored the Hawks 26-7 in the second and third quarters to put the game well out of reach.

Savana Stangeland put up seven points in the loss. Kaitlin Fisher and Kayla Monthei both finished with four points and seven rebounds; Fisher also collected three steals.

The schedule doesn't let up for the Hawks, who will travel to ninth-ranked (3A) Nevada on Tuesday.
